Two and a half weeks after I started, I watched the flat screen in Ryker’s office with a group of his dedicated analysts.

“It appears . . .” the local reporter said, white-faced, “the Florida property bond auction has . . .” There was a loud crash, screaming, and the sound of glass breaking behind him. Looting had broken out in Miami during a sunny spring high tide with three feet of flooding. “Failed,” he continued. “Officials were spotted at Palm Beach private airport. Hey!”

The camera swiveled to a woman with a child strapped to her back waiting in a small boat. Two older boys were busy ransacking the news van, which sat on higher ground.

I looked at the faces of the analysts. Wide eyes and open jaws displayed concern, fear, and anticipation. They’d crunched the number on what would happen next, and it was scary.

Ryker brought a machete down on a champagne bottle, exploding it, and shouted, “Get the fuck back to your desks!”

Florida’s fall was the trigger markets were waiting for. Volatility indices went haywire as equities fell limit down (losses that triggered a halt for trading) for four days straight before rallying 10 percent and then resuming their plunge. The quantitative hedge funds, those that tuned their models on terabytes of data from the past, blew out across the board. Bonds followed equities as the market predicted correctly—inflation was about to decimate a fragile global consumer. Around every corner, there was a trade that Atlas had put in place over the preceding months, now being managed by their new head of special situations—me.
